I experienced nostalgia when I first entered high school. My lifestyle suddenly became much more stressful, which reminded me of when I was little and had plenty of free time to explore my hobbies, tried out new things. To me, nostalgia is the feeling I get when I feel upset with my present lift and start looking back at the past, making comparison.

Whenever I flip through the photographs of myself as a child, I find myself pausing at moments I barely remember but somehow still feel connected to. I could spot my favorite stuffed animal (named Buster) I used to carry everywhere, or the birthday cakes I had year after year. Little pieces of childhood came back to me through photographs and a sense of nostalgia. Nostalgia, to me, looks like flipping through an old photo album and rediscovering the small moments that once made up my everyday life.

A nostalgia that I experienced is making hot tea with my grandpa. Every time I would go back to my grandparent’s house, I would always make these specific tea with my grandma, and having an afternoon tea time with her. Now, going back to my grandparent’s house and making that tea again is evoking that nostalgia of what I had done frequently in my childhood.

One thing that instantly evokes nostalgia for me is hearing a song I used to listen to repeatedly during a specific period of my life. Even if I haven’t heard it in years, the first few seconds can bring back specific places and people. I think it has that power because I wasn’t intentionally trying to memorize those moments. The song was simply playing in the background while those memories were being formed, so my brain connected them. Hearing it again acts like a retrieval cue that brings the whole period back.
